Ulster Visit to Munster

On Tuesday 14th Feb twenty two children and four adults Suzy Armstrong, Alan Monteith, Barry Kennedy and Lizanne Kennedy arrived in Ennis after their long coach ride from Lisburn. The children had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. They arrived at 4pm at the Auburn Lodge Hotel and after checking in they made straight for the swimming pool.

After dinner they went to the local badminton club where another 18 juniors were waiting. Children from both clubs were teamed together for a Fun Blitz on the two courts. More food and drinks were ready for the the visitors. The Blitz was very enjoyable and finished at 10pm, after which there was a presentation of prizes sponsored by the Ennis Club. Suzy Armstrong presented Lisburn Racquets Club Hoodies to those involved in running the event. She was then presented with a sports pennant from Ennis.

The following day the Ulster visitors left Ennis and made the short journey to the U.L. Sports Arena. Here 8 courts were available from 10 to 3 pm for a Fun Match with a Munster Junior Selection. Again children from Munster and Ulster were teamed together. Each child had at least 11 games each in a round robin event. The adjacent Restaurant served an excellent lunch after which another fun tournament was held. After the presentation of prizes a medal to commemorate the trip was given to all the Ulster Juniors who had not featured in the previous events.

The Ulster Juniors then headed to the 50M Pool to complete their trip to Munster, after which they made a safe return to Lisburn. Suzy Armstrong wrote after:   “Just a note of thanks for all your hard work in organising such a superb two days for our players from Alpha.  The whole event could not have been better organised or run.  We all arrived back at the club safe and well yesterday evening somewhat less energetic then when we had departed.

The experience for the kids of playing in two different venues, seeing the fantastic set up in UL including the use of the pool was something alot of them certainly in their badminton capacity would not have dreamt of doing.  They thoroughly enjoyed your mixed concept and meeting your gang also.  Their next question was when are you coming for your return visit!. Something we will have to organise in the not too distant future.”

Haynes Cup and Shield 2011/12

This year we decided to run the competition early in the season, Oct 23rd in UL. Three Teams entered the Cup section (last year there wasn’t any Cup as only one team entered) and five Teams entered the Shield section.

The Cup started at 10am and all games were a very high standard. The format of the competition was the same as last year, each match consisted of 2 sets, 1 pt for each set won. The scores were as follows,

The Haynes Cup which is 80 yrs old was presented to the Captain of the UCC Team Liam NcNamara by the Munster Chairman Liam Chadwick.

The Shield competition started directly after the Cup, the five Teams were Melbourne(Cork), UL(Limerick), Lismore(Waterford), Roscrea and Templemore (Tipperary)

This was a very busy competition, it was a round robin competition, so by the end there was plenty of Bio Freeze, deep heat and any sort of energy drink players could get their hands on used.

The competition was played in great spirit and there was great co-operation from all the players.

The Shield was presented to Albert Chui, captain of the UL Team.

In total 154 sets of Badminton were played on 4 Courts that day.

Thanks to all the Teams for entering this competition.

Moya Ryan at the Irish U13 National Championships

Moya Ryan of Ennis Badminton Club recently competed at the Irish U13 National Championships in Lisburn. Moya seeded No 2 in the competition reached the final of the singles event. It was a close game and a good performance by Moya but she had to settle for the silver medal on this occasion. In the doubles event she teamed up with her long term partner Kate Frost of Mount Pleasant, Leinster to take the Irish Under 13 doubles title. This is a great achievement for the young player and added to her recent Munster titles at U13 singles, doubles, mixed and U15 singles and doubles, it has been a great season for the 12 year old.

Juvenile Intercounty Round 2

Round 2 of this seasons juvenile inter county competitions took place last weekend in the killarney sports and leisure centre.

Round 1 which took place in november again in killarney had teams at under 11 -13 -15- and 17. In this competition the winning teams after day one lose there top two boys and top two girls for round 2 and the team that comes second lose there top boy and top girl these players would be agreed between the county and the grading committee

In round 2 under 13 we had teams from Clare,Cork,Kerry and Waterford in november Clare had won and Cork were runners up this time round it was Cork who came out on top with Clare second the most exciting match in the u/13 was the game between the hosts kerry and Clare after some great games they both ended up with 10 points each. All the games on the day were two sets  to 21 with one point per set.

The same countys again had teams at under 15 and despite losing there top players from round one Cork again came out on top with Clare again comming second

We had three teams in the u/17 competition Clare,Cork and Waterford here Clare won with 25 points Cork were second with 19 The only disappointment on the day was the fact that the home county couldnt feild an u/17 team after comming second in round 1 in november and that Tipperary and Limerick didnt have a team at any age group.

Cork narrowly win Brewster Cup on the 60th Anniversary of its playing.

The 60th Brewster Cup Tournament was played last Sunday in Killarney (6th March) with three counties, Cork, Kerry and Waterford, competing for the trophy. It was decided to adopt a system that would allow all three counties to play each other at the same time rather than adopting a round robin format. This was done to help to ensure that none of the competing counties would have an early advantage.

From early on it became apparent that this tournament was going to go down to the wire with a number of the early games going to three sets with wins being shared between the counties. Of these, Sean Murphy and Billy Lacey (Kerry) had a fine win against David O’ Driscoll and Conor Leahy (Cork) in 1st mens doubles 23-21 in the 3rd set . On court at the same time as this doubles match was being played the mens singles match between Eoin Walsh (Waterford) and Neil Moynihan (Cork) was heading to its conclusion, the result eventually going in Waterfords favor 24-22 in the 3rd set. Of the other early match ups Trish Doyle and Patricia Herlihy (Cork) narrowly beat Gemma Tobin and Aoife Maher (Waterford) 21-16, again in the 3rd set.

Coming into the final round of games the result was still in the balance with both Kerry and Cork having a slight edge over Waterford. Of these, Patricia Herlihy and Terence Rumley (Cork) had a narrow win against Peggy Horan and Sean Murphy (Kerry) in 3rd mixed, eventually coming through 21-15 in the 3rd set. Two other mixed doubles were on court while this game was being played; Sinead Galvin and Michael Crossan (Kerry) came through 2nd mixed against Emer O’ Keeffe and David O’ Driscoll (Cork) and when Trish Doyle and Neill Moynihan (Cork) came through a tough encounter in 1st mixed against Helen Twomey and Billy Lacey the calculators had to come out….

The final result going in favor of a worthy Cork team on a sets count back.

Final score: Cork 10 points (24 sets), Kerry 10 points (22 sets), Waterford 7 points.

While all would agree that the tournament was a great success and a very high standard of badminton was on show for all who watched on, it is hoped to have more counties involved in the coming years..

Senior 1 and Junior Championships 2010/11

As the 8 courts in the Killarney sports centre eagerly awaited the arrival of the players who would, for the next 8hrs keep them company, the players were checking strings, grips, making sure the water bottle was full of water the essential fuel to keep them going for the day ahead. Players checked in, entry fees paid… and the battle commenced.

The courts wondered which of them would have the first final and sure enough by 12.30 the finalist were decided in the Singles in both the Senior 1 and Junior competitions. Court 8 hosted the first final of the day and as the day went on all ten titles were decided. Finals in all sections were of a very high standard. Each title was certainly hard fought and well earned. As silence returned to the courts again as the players departed, some with prizes, a few aches and pains and a few broken strings the courts were left to think about the marvellous games that had been played during the day and wonder when will the Badminton tour return again.
